The Circassian people are composed of several tribes living in the Caucasus region of the North Caucasus (Circassia), which is the territory between the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea which is divided by mountain ranges.
Over the years Circassia has been subjected to conquests and wars, the most recent of which was the Russian invasion, which started in 1763 and lasted for more than hundred years, The Circassian people fought and faced this courageously resulting in thousands of martyrs and the utter destruction of hundreds of Circassian villages.
On May 21st, 1864, the fall of Circassia was announced followed by the forced emigration of the majority of the Circassian people to the regions controlled by the Ottoman Empire. The number of displaced persons reached over one million, who settled in the Levant, Iraq, Turkey and several countries of the world.
In 1917, Circassia was divided into three provinces (Kuban, Tirik, and the Black Sea). Since 1921, three republics have been established under the Russian control (Adyge, Circassk and Kabardinia Balkaria).
Today, the name Circassian is spoken of all the peoples whose origins are from the North Caucasus region.
The Circassians follow Islam.
